I’m from Fayette County. If you’ve ever talked to me you may hear me express disdain for that fact. Granted, I thoroughly enjoyed my youth in Fayette County but it was my lack of ability to relate to the people who live there that drove me away.
The mindset of the majority of people in Fayette County is the same as the rest of Rural America. These people ‘Cling to guns or religion’ as Obama so beautifully coined. People who in public votes consistently vote against their own interests. People who are poor in the grand scheme of things, embrace and use social welfare, but vote for the person who opposes it. People who want religious freedom, but only for the religion that they practice. People who are born of families that immigrated to this country, but are in favor of keeping anyone else out who’s family is not from here. Factors like this are why I left and moved North to the “Big City” where the sense of community and mutual respect for your neighbor, regardless of social stature, faith, or ethnicity is much more apparent.
Fayette County is where I’m from, and because of that, because of the time I spent there as a youth and young adult, regardless of how I feel about the people, I still love to travel to there and experience some of the finer things that is has to offer. Below are pictures are from several places, in no apparent order, that make Fayette County a a rural haven for “city” people like me: The Jumonville Cross Overlook, The Summit Overlook, Cumberland Falls in Ohio Pyle, The Ohio Pyle white water rapids, and various signs and foliage you can see along the way. A friend of mine, Ashley Benson, who is by definition a TRUE suburban city person, joined me on this journey. It was a beautiful day with beautiful sights and the company was very much appreciated.
Fayette County may be a place that I’ll never live again, but it’s definitely a place that I enjoy visiting.
